Overview
Laboratory of Functional Medicine was established in 1999, belonging to West China Medical foundation Experiment Teaching Center. It is a teaching platform for training undergraduate students major in medical sciences. Basically, the trainees conduct experiments related to Physiology, Pathophysiology and Pharmacology in our platform, under the supervision of our faculty members. The platform is currently led by Prof. Yufang WANG. The faculty members in our platform consists of 6 resident members and many non-resident members. The non-resident members are faculty members in the Department of Physiology, or Pathophysiology, or Pharmacology, they are routinely recruited for conducting the course Experiments of Functional Medicine. Our faculty member has been the chief editor of the textbook Experiments of Functional Medicine since 2006.
Teaching
As an important part of experimental training program, we offer the course Experiments of Functional Medicine, which was awarded as “Excellent Course” in Sichuan Province in 2012.
This course is mainly related to the following topics: 1) Detecting the physiological activities and regulations of the body; 2) understanding the mechanisms of diseases, including their onset, development and outcome; 3) Evaluating the physiological or biochemical effects of drugs on the organism.
The course is open for all medical students. The average teaching load is more than 55,000 hours per year.
Research
Laboratory of Functional Medicine has insisted on reform and innovation on teaching and researching. We constantly explore new theories, new technologies, new methods in the experimental course content and experimental teaching methods. We have undertaken 2 projects supported by National Natural Science Foundation, 7 projects funded by the Laboratory and Equipment Management of Sichuan University, and 2 teaching reformation projects from the Academic Affairs Office of Sichuan University.
